As a locksmith serving homeowners all across Los Angeles — from Downtown lofts to Sherman Oaks family homes, Marina del Rey condos, Highland Park bungalows, and everything in between — I’ve learned that strong home security isn’t about one single lock or one single upgrade. It’s about building layers of protection that work together.
With December being one of the busiest months for travel, deliveries, holiday visitors, and increased foot traffic around neighborhoods, it’s the perfect time to evaluate your home’s security. Whether you live in North Hollywood, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Inglewood, the South Bay, the San Fernando Valley, or the Eastside, this checklist is built specifically for LA homes and the unique challenges our city presents.
I’ve created this complete home security checklist based on what I see every day as a locksmith — the strengths, weaknesses, habits, and risks that affect homeowners throughout Los Angeles. Follow this step-by-step guide, and your home will be significantly safer, stronger, and more prepared for whatever comes your way.
1. Start With the Most Important Area: Your Exterior Doors
Doors are the #1 entry point for burglars in Los Angeles — not windows, not garages, not roofs. The door is where most intruders try first, and they often succeed simply because the door hardware or frame is outdated or weak.
Wherever I go — from Westwood to Woodland Hills, from Venice to Long Beach — I see doors that need reinforcement. Here’s what I check:
✔ Check The Deadbolt
You should have a Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt on every exterior door. If your deadbolt is over 10 years old or sticks, grinds, or feels loose, it’s time to replace it.
✔ Make Sure The Deadbolt Extends Fully
Your deadbolt should extend at least one inch into the frame. Many cheap deadbolts don’t extend far enough to resist force.
✔ Reinforce The Strike Plate
This is one of the biggest weaknesses in older LA homes. I see this especially in places like Pico-Union, Echo Park, Highland Park, and Van Nuys — a cheap strike plate makes it easy for someone to kick in a door.
The fix? Stronger hardware and longer screws drilled deep into the studs.
✔ Inspect The Door Frame
A lock is only as strong as the frame holding it. Many homes — especially older ones in Pasadena, Santa Monica, and West Adams — have frames that are cracked, soft, or misaligned.
A reinforced frame can prevent forced entry attempts completely.
2. Secure Rear, Side, and Garage Doors — The Most Overlooked Entry Points
Every day, I see homeowners who secure their front door perfectly but underestimate the importance of secondary entrances. These areas are hidden, poorly lit, or not used as often, and that’s exactly why intruders target them.
This applies to homes in Studio City, West Adams, Reseda, Culver City, and Atwater Village especially.
✔ Rear Door
Often has the weakest lock in the house. Upgrade the deadbolt and reinforce the frame.
✔ Side Door
Usually has only a knob lock — which is not enough. Add a deadbolt immediately.
✔ Garage Door
The door between your garage and home must have a deadbolt, not just a handle lock.
Strengthening these doors eliminates major blind spots.
3. Evaluate Your Window Security (Don’t Skip This Step)
Windows may not be the main entry point, but they must still be secured properly. Many LA homes have:
- Original 1950s-1980s window hardware
- Loose latches
- Misaligned frames
- Old sliding windows with weak tracks
Areas like Glendale, Long Beach, and El Sereno, where many older homes are located, often show window weaknesses.
✔ Make Sure All Window Locks Work
If the latch wiggles, sticks, or doesn’t fully secure, it needs servicing.
✔ Reinforce Sliding Windows
These are common in apartments across Hollywood, Koreatown, and Downtown LA. Sliding windows should have secondary locking devices like pins or track blockers.
✔ Consider Security Film
This isn’t visible from the outside but strengthens glass from shattering.
4. Upgrade and Rekey Your Locks Every Few Years
Your locks and keys should never stay the same for decades. Many homes I work in — especially in Northridge, Eagle Rock, Hawthorne, and Sherman Oaks — still have locks that are 15–25 years old.
✔ Rekey If Keys Have Changed Hands
If you’ve shared keys with babysitters, guests, contractors, tenants, or old roommates, rekeying is essential.
✔ Replace If Locks Are Old or Worn
A new lock instantly strengthens your home’s defenses.
✔ Get One-Key Convenience
I often rekey homes so every door uses the same key. This is hugely helpful for families.
5. Secure Sliding Glass Doors (One of LA’s Weakest Points)
Sliding doors are extremely common in Los Angeles — from Valley Village to Playa Vista to Long Beach — but they are also one of the weakest security points.
✔ Check If the Latch is Strong
Most factory latches are not secure enough.
✔ Install a Security Bar or Pin
This prevents lifting or forcing the door open.
✔ Make Sure The Track Is Secure
Loose tracks make it easy to bypass the door.
Upgrading sliding door security prevents a major entry risk.
6. Improve Outdoor Lighting Around Your Home
Burglars prefer darkness. Homes on dimly lit streets — like parts of West Adams, Lincoln Heights, Atwater Village, or East Hollywood — are more vulnerable.
✔ Add Motion Lighting
Install lights near side and back doors.
✔ Brighten Your Entryway
A well-lit front entrance deters intruders.
✔ Use Timers When Traveling
This makes your home look occupied even when it’s not.
Lighting is one of the simplest but most effective ways to keep your home safe.
7. Strengthen Your Garage Security
Garages are a major target in areas like the San Fernando Valley, Long Beach, Torrance, and South LA.
✔ Keep Your Garage Door Fully Closed
You’d be surprised how many homes are targeted because the garage door was left open.
✔ Upgrade The Interior Garage Door Lock
This door should have a deadbolt.
✔ Don’t Store Spare Keys In The Garage
It’s one of the first places intruders look.
Garage security directly impacts your home’s overall protection.
8. Don’t Leave Spare Keys Outside (Ever)
This is one of the most common and dangerous mistakes I see — from Santa Monica to Glendale to Burbank to Inglewood.
Spare keys should never be hidden under:
- Mats
- Rocks
- Flowerpots
- Mailboxes
- Lights
- Fake rocks
- Outdoor furniture
Burglars check these places first.
9. Invest in a Smart Lock If You Want Better Access Control
Smart locks are extremely popular in Los Angeles neighborhoods like Silver Lake, Sherman Oaks, Playa Vista, and Hollywood.
✔ They Prevent Lost Key Issues
Perfect for families and frequent guests.
✔ You Can Give Temporary Codes
Great for holiday visitors or Airbnb hosts.
✔ Remote Access
You can lock or unlock from your phone.
✔ Activity Tracking
See when someone enters your home.
Smart locks are one of the best ways to modernize your home security.
10. Have a Locksmith Inspect Your Home Once a Year
Just like you service your car, you should service your locks and doors — especially in Los Angeles, where climate, dust, and heavy use take a toll.
When I inspect a home, I always check:
- Every door
- Every lock
- Every frame
- Key condition
- Door alignment
- Hardware wear
- Access control habits
- Secondary entrances
- Points of weakness
Homeowners are often shocked to learn how unsafe a worn lock or misaligned door actually was.
11. Make Security a Family Routine
Security isn’t just hardware — it’s habits.
Here’s what I teach families across Los Angeles:
✔ Lock every door before bed
Don’t rely on habit — check physically.
✔ Don’t share codes
Keep access limited to trusted people.
✔ Don’t broadcast travel plans
Wait to post until you’re back home.
✔ Keep valuables out of sight
Especially in homes near busy streets.
Good habits are free — and incredibly effective.
